Wednesday Night Game produces Magic….and more Magic!
The 8pm match-up between Parish Players and Ipswich produced some of the most sophisticated finishing ever witnessed at Crescent City Soccer. The two teams, who have both been with the league since the inaugural season, each showed a level of class in goal-scoring that would have gotten Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho out of their seats!
Parish Players opened their account in the first minute of the match with a long, low, driven shot from Jeff Onstott. Not to be outdone, Juan Miranda hit a smashing volley out of the air, which found the top corner of the Parish Players’ net. Onstott then stuck again…and again with two smashing volleys (goals 2&3 on the night) off of pin-point services from Nick Mastagni. However, in between the two Onstott wonderstrikes, Wes Ahrens broke on a through ball and delivered a perfectly placed chip into the top side of the net to bring Ipswich level at 2-2 just before the Onstott goal put Parish Players back in front. With the score at 3-2, Pat Ibert produced an arial side-volley that would have forced the league management to turn off the lights and shut down for the evening, but it was parried away by Parish Players goalkeeper, Becky Wollman…….this concluded just the first half of play!
With the second half producing its own share of exciting goals, shots, and saves, the game finished with Parish Players pulling out the victory by a final score of 10-5. Thanks to both teams for what was not only an extremely exciting game to watch and referee but a clean game with very little fouls.
Also, congratulations to Jeff Onstott and Nick Mastagni for scoring five and four of the Parish Players’ goals, respectively.
Players of the Week (Apr. 19-24)
Crescent City Soccer have selected the players of the week for April 19th-24th. Jason Erickson of Glass Half-Full (Comp. II – Wed.) certainly put on an optimistic performance as his cut-back move was working like a charm. With the ball on a string, Jason led his team to a victory over Ipswich this past Wednesday night. George Fisk of Elite FC (Comp I – Mon.) brought his usual all-out, fence-shaking hustle this past Monday with in a well deserved win over Frank & Bens. Gabriel Fette of Gabe Corps (Recreation – Sat. ) took over between the pipes for the second half of his team’s clash with a good Field Monkeys side. It is hard to put Gabe’s performance into words, so let’s just say with skinned shoulders and wild rubber pellet-filled hair, Gabe managed to overcome a barrage of hard shots and break-aways to keep a shut-out in the second half. Manager of the week goes to Mahmoud Fallatah of UNO (Comp. 1 – Mon.) for working with the league to schedule two make-up games (and compete in his regularly scheduled match) then leading his team to two victories – one being a new record margin of victory in the Crescent City Soccer League….14-0!
Congratulations to all the guys. From here on, the league will select an “Unbeatable Team of the Week” for all leagues. Stay tuned-in to the site for the inaugural Unbeatable Team of the Week selections!

Lighting Project Underway
The permanent lighting project is underway the Crescent City Soccer 6v6 field! As we understand from Frischertz Electric, the underground work has been completed. The poles and fixtures will be brought in during one of the next two weeks (depending on availability of “the crane”). The league has not yet received confirmation as to the exact days of the pole-installation, but will be in touch if there should need to be any games rescheduled on account of the project. The lights should be up and fully functioning sometime in the next two weeks!
A quick note from the league…
In light of the great match which produced this week’s player of the week (Ramon Vargas or Field Monkeys) and several other great match-ups that have come down to the wire in just two weeks of play, the league would like to point out how exciting and fun the new seasons have been thus far. With the recent addition of a third league, the balance of ability level is providing many exciting games to play, observe, and even referee! The enthusiasm, support, and team-comradery on the field and from the benches is very noticeable. It has been a real treat to watch….big thanks to all the teams, and we look forward to the rest of the season!
Player of the Week
The performance of the week for week two of the spring season goes to Ramon Vargas of Field Monkeys in the Saturday league. Ramon turned in five of his team’s six goals (3 coming late in the game , including one match winner) in a very exciting game against the Crescent City Stars. Both teams played very well. Congratulations to Ramon and all the Field Monkeys!
