Team of the Week (Week 3)

Team of the Week
Week 3
Week 3 was filled with hard fought battles and defensive discipline. This weeks team highlighted some individuals who may otherwise be overlooked. But the watchful eyes of the Crescent City Soccer League saw that these defensive performances is what really led their team to victory. Parish Players Rachel Riser and Goalkeeper Becky fought ferociously to contain a potent Faubourg St.John attack. Imraan Ismail ran tirelessly to keep his team on track and the ball out of the net. Many of his defensive battles were quickly turned into counter attacks that notched a goal for his Crescent City teammates. Goalkeeper Ryan Messina tended an almost perfect game for the league leading Glass Half Full. He sacrificed his body on numerous occasions and played with great intelligence. Our manager/player of the week goes to Richard Llanes who has noticably turned his City Park F.C. into a league championship contender. Richard led his team with great insight from the back.

Week 2
Week 2 saw its fair share of exciting high tempo soccer. Jason Dormandy helped lead his team to their first win of the season by pulling off some last minute heroics in a nail biter over The Pelicans. Jen Kritch made light of a weakened Gabecorps Team in the Saturday league but really proved herself as a top player in the league when she clawed her Faubourg St.John squad to a 7-7 tie with defending Wednesday league Champions K-Blockers. Adan Garcia maneuvered with grace and ease as he helped Real Metaire put away a tough Krewe Du Zoo group.  The Jimmer had a standout day with two goals in a Jen Gold win over a highly touted Craigslist F.C.  Lastly Andrew Mansfield came up big for the Cougars as the last man on an upcoming squad looking to capture the Saturday League title.

Wednesday League Champions!

The Wednesday League Championship produced a heated battle between two quality teams, as the K-Blockers pulled off the on-paper-upset over a previously undefeated Glass Half Full squad. The match went back and forth, with K-Blockers being led by their crafty striker duo Julian Largaespada, who scored multiple goals, which contributed to his award of the Golden Boot for the season.

Each team countered the other in a nail-biter that ended with a scoreline of 7-6.

The Champion, K-Blockers as well as Glass Half Full, who went undefeated during regular season, have both been promoted to the Tuesday Competitive I League.

New season starts this week!

Saturday Recap and New Champion!

The clouds opened up and the rain fell, amidst bad weather and intensifying conditions the Saturday league produced some of the best action of the season. LA United suffered its first lost in a battle of wills going in to the 2nd leg of their double header  verse a quality Jen Gold’s side. Jen Gold’s team managed to put together a strong performance stringing passes together in combination to maneuver through a usually impenetrable LA United side. This was even all the more impressive because Jen Golds team was missing its esteemed manager/coach/player/motivator Jen Gold.
The performances continued to improve later into the day even though the weather did not. With storms in the background and heavy rain FC Envy played some of the best soccer of their season. Their ace in the hole, Abbey Flaherty scored a league leading 4 goals on the day. Abbey played with intelligence and poise as she placed ball after ball in the back of the net, on all star keeper Paul “The Wall” Messina. FC Envy collected a win and tie in their two games.
Linsday Caton had the goal of the day when she propelled her body forward with complete disregard and picked off an intended pass by Crescent City Stars keeper with her head and easily redirected it into the net. She then retired herself to the bench realizing that she had just made the goal of the season and wanted to give others the chance to mimic her glory.
Our final game of the season  was more like a championship. Due to the LA United loss earlier in the day Field Monkeys were in prime position to grab the championship with a tie or a win. The Orphans played passionaltey and went up early on the Field Monkeys. With 2 minutes left in the half Field Monkeys Ramon Vargas played a quick give and go, and placed the ball in the back of the net to tie the game up at 3. The second half saw its share of heroics with the Field Monkey keeper sacrificing his body to protect the net. The game ended in a 3-3 tie giving the Field Monkeys the point they needed to take over first place.

Monday Competitive I Championship

With both teams having clinched their berth in the Championship, the two-time Crescent City Soccer Champs, Team Ronnies squared off against a very unintimidated UNO side. Having previously taken a 3-0 result from UNO, and allowing a league-low of just 12 goals all season, the Ronnies were the on-paper favorites to take the trophy.

Both teams played played a physical and composed game, which saw the talented Ronnies side unable to break through the stingy UNO defense, as UNO manager Mahmoud Fallatah held strong to his typical game plan of Impenetrable team defending to spark quick counter-attacks. In keeping with the tune, UNO claimed an early lead on a Ronnies pass that was picked-off and turned quickly upfield for a  sound finish. At half UNO had a 2-0 lead over the dazed Ronnies – only the second time the Ronnies have trailed in their team’s history.

The second half was marked by determination and patience. With the Ronnies feeling the pressure to score they pushed forward with tenacity, which was foiled by UNO’s bend but not break mentality. The patient defense waited for the right opportunity to pounce with Mike Ledet leading the side with relentless pressure and sharp shooting on the offense end. UNO managed to put away 5 more goals in the second half and won the game by an austounding 7-2 score.

Congratulations to the UNO soccer team for thier hardwork and determination, which now crowns them new holders of The Crescent City Container (or “Crock,” which I think is hilarious on account of double meaning)!

Team of the Week (Apr. 28 – May 3)

The players on this week’s Crescent City Soccer team of the week all have one thing in common – they all scored multiple laser-beam goals in their matches over the past week of competition….with the exception of one, or course, who did just the opposite in fending off a lot of great scoring opportunities.

The Wednesday night league’s (Comp. II) team of Magic, the Parish Players, placed two marksmen on the team of the week: Jeff Onstat provided 5 confident strikes in a big win over Ipswich, while his partner in crime, Nick Mastagni, added 4 of his own. The dynamic duo teamed of for 9 of Parish Players 10 goals in the match. Another classy performance was turned in on Wednesday night from City Park FC’s Jason Manguno who set the tempo for his team in a persistent performance and upset over play-off contender and former league-leading, K-Blockers. Jason showed a lot of character in the game with a great goal against his former high school teammates, which would eventually be enough to lift City Park to victory. The net-minder in this match-up was equally as impressive. Al Silvas simply could not be beaten from anywhere by the K-blockers team. There were many great shots, counter attacks and break-aways, but all were foiled by Al and his superior angle-cutting and shot-stopping.

Monday night’s Fletcher Wheaton of Team Ronnies showed more of his sniper-like quality after his team were uncharacteristically down at half-time. Fletcher came on in the second half and provided 3 thunderous and accurate strikes that would eventually seal the deal for Team Ronnies – keeping them undefeated at 6-0 and advancing the team to face UNO in the quest for the coveted Crescent City cup.

Rounding out our list of players for the team of the week is John Hatch who provided great play for The Situation in their last minute loss on Saturday. Frazzled from the toil of preparing for his law school finals, John showed great composure and an ability to finish as he set down his books to join his team of future Attorneys as they played with heart and conviction.

This week’s manager of the week honors goes to Jared L’Hoste, as he and his team were fantastic in working with the League Management to schedule a pair of make-up games over the past week. Big thanks  and a nice Hokey Pokey to Jared and his team, because That’s what it’s all about.
