Summer II League Champions!
After an exciting week of Championship finals, the new Crescent City Soccer cream has risen to the top.
The Competitive 1 final featured two Crescent City Soccer powerhouses. In their typical hodge-podge of blue shirts, Uptown FC took the field against a Team Ronnies squad who were clad in brand-new purple deep V-neck jerseys. It was a sight to behold and team unity was made apparent, as the back of each jersey featured the name “Ronnie” across the top. The match was heated, and true to prediction, it came down to the wire. With Team Ronnies gripping tight to a 5-4 advantage, it was John Hatch of Uptown who decided to take the game into his own hands. With mere seconds left in stoppage time, a cleared corner kick dropped 20 yards from goal and right at John Hatch’s feet. With the whistle to the referee’s lips, Hatch took a positive touch, eyed the net, thought twice and correctly decided to let fly a volley that would prove to be the equalizer! Sudden-death overtime ensued, and it was equally as close to the end of the 6-man overtime period that Uptown capped their heroics with a fantastic individual effort and thunderous strike from Rafael Pinido.
The Competitive II final featured two teams who are very familiar with one another in Arsenal and The Gamblers. This was a chess match of discipline, and in the end, it was Arsenal who left themselves the least exposed. A stingy defense gave no easy goals as their typical, patient attack chiseled away and eventually found the net. The game was very tight until the end, but with a 2-1 lead, Arsenal broke it wide open with a barrage of late goals and finished off their Championship run with a 6-1 victory.
Competitive III saw the Nick Mastagni and his Savage Sisterhood (aka – The Parish Players) face-off against a talented Kilmarnock side. It was an inspiring play-off run for both teams, but in the end, the Scottish Premier Club’s namesake proved to be a little too much to handle for the Parish Players. Though Kilmarnock held the advantage for most of the game Mastagni never failed to relinquish his dream of the Championship and pushed the Players into an almost comeback that fell two shots to short. Kilmarnock manager Nathan Cooper finally tasted victory as several of his teams were able to reach the Championship but all were left incomplete in their quest for the prestigious Crescent City Championship.
The Competitive IV Championship rivaled Competitive I for the most dramatic of all the League Finals. An always enthusiastic Young Fly Society took on a 6 maned Craigslist F.C. As the temperature peaked so did many tempers. Young Fly Society fiery side was carded into submission on several occasions. But Manager Brittani Espinoza whipped her lads into shape as they needed to refocus if they were going to capture the cup. Craigslist led for the entire game, but Young Fly Society never found reason to panic, they played a decisive pinpointed passing attack that beat the Craigslist defenders several times only to be stopped by a heroic sliding keeper save. As time ticked down Craigslist saw its lead diminished to 1 goal. With 45 secs on the clock Craigslist keeper had possession, in a minor error in judgment he let a ball go to an inattentive teammate who was stripped by a soaring Young Fly opposition. The society member took a touch and buried the equalizer with under a minute to go. A demoralized Craigslist had to rebound its emotions for the Overtime but 4 minutes in Young Fly Society was able to capitalize off a hand ball free kick 15 yards out the box. A quick restart caught a tired Craigslist side by surprise and Society member Andrew Wyatt ripped a blazing Upper 90 shot for the game winner.
The last final to be decided was the Recreation Championship. As the only player to score in multiple league finals, George Fisk (aka: Goal Fountain, Fisk of Fury, Hammer Head, Thunder Bomber, Slippery Stan, Devil’s Foot…etc.) took the field to continue his previous performance persistently precipitating points providing pellets of paranormal placement and pipe-bomb proportions. In a conclusion to a season that rivaled the most touching of love stories, it was George and Ben Harwood who set aside their differences and held hands across the finish-line, becoming partners in crime to propel the Crescent City Stars to their first Championship victory.
Congratulations too all of the Teams who outlasted all the others. It was a very exciting Championship week, and we look forward to watching everyone defend their titles!
Stars proved impenetrable in Saturday Semi’s
Crescent City Stars have had a roller coaster season. They barely escaped The Other Team in the quarter finals, and haven’t had a full squad show up to any game this year. Once again the team came without reserves and they were playing an extremely talented St.Charles United. The Stars jumped out to an early 1-0 league catching a sleeping St.Charles back line. George Fisk and Ben Harwood worked well of eachother, and many times connected to cut through the opposition. Without any reinforcements it was hard for the Stars to keep up with the pace of play set by the pushing St.Charles United. The score was tied up at 2-2 3 minutes into the second half. The shot tally was extremely lopsided on the side of St.Charles United. Paul “The Wall” Messina earned his name, and earned his team a 4-3 victory, in a surprisng upset. Paul was impenetrable in goal, shots were fired hi, low, close and from a far. Time and time again Paul willingly sacrificed his body and stopped countless amounts of break a ways and one time shots. It was an impressive victory and it proved that Paul has returned to fine form since his season ending injury 2 season ago. The Stars will face the first year Uptowners who are led by local journeyman Tommy Staub. With the late season female addition of Kate Tannian the Uptowners have really garnered some much needed depth. Noshir Pesika leads the Uptowners offense, that has proved potent in recent matches tallying 12 goals against Pikicorps.
It looks as though the match up between the Stars and Uptowners will involve a battle of “Ball Blasting Goal Monsters” and wicked quick goal keepers.
Parish Players (now) vs. Parish Players (Oct. ’09)
The Parish Players are one of the Crescent City Soccer originals. The team has been in the Wednesday night league since October of 2009 – when Wednesday night featured 8 teams in its first and only league. They finished 6th out of the 8 teams.
Led by Manager, Samantha Frailey, as well as Coed Soccer’s most active player-agent, Nick Mastagni, the original squad was was marked by a pair of colorful shoes, as well as a jovial, glad-to-be-here and care-free attitude. It was apparent in watching the Parish Players that they were indeed some of New Orleans finest Soccer enthusiasts, however, they had an incredibly hard time keeping the ball in-play on this new style of 6v6 field (featuring field boundaries).
Still led by Samantha, a more active Nick Mastagni, and thunderous and goal-shattering volleys from Jeff Onstott, the Players are now marked by and a more competitive demeanor and a cast of characters who use bits of screws, nails, and loose change for chewing-gum…..and significantly more colorful shoes. It is now apparent in watching the team play that they are on a mission. Having adapted to the fast confines of the 6v6 field, they now display a level of ball-control that would make Jenna Jamison blush. The team have also seen very few changes in personnel. Though they lost their defensive stalwart in Becky Wollman (GK) and have turned over a few short-term trialists, the PPs’ (as abbreviated in the referee’s scorebook) player-agent would not let that get in the way of success. Nick managed to negotiate three player acquisitions: Kevin Rogers (MF – transferred Tickle-Me-Elmo for an undisclosed amount), Andrew Crosby (GK) and Dulcie Smotherman (Straight Gangsta-Baller). With the three summer-signings, plus Rachel Riser living up to her name at center back, this team is now for real.
Last night’s semi-final was a testament. As the only Coed team to qualify for a Semi-final (actually, featuring more ladies than gentleman on the roster) the Parish-Players had a stunna vs. this season’s #1 play-off seed and previous season finalist, Real Metairie. With a 4-2 result, the Players passed, shot and frankly, intimidated (the referee) their way to the this season’s Championship-Final to face right-division regular season champion, Kilmarnock, which is sure to be a nail-biter (in more ways than one for the iron-jawed PP’s).
As the Parish Players prepare to celebrate one year of Wednesdays with us (having competed for as long as the league is old). Crescent City Soccer wish to thank and congratulate the Parish Players for reaching this point in their quest for Coed greatness. It has been absolutely entertaining to watch the glory unfold.
Fun Fact about the Parish Players: Blaming her total lack of creativity, Samatha Frailey originally named the team “The Royal Bastards,” but in an excited and last-stitch registration amendment (submitted via g-chat) the team manager unveiled the current team name.
Monday Night Playoffs!
Monday Night had some incredible matches!
Incisal Edge vs FVB proved to be well matched pair. FVB who started with the lead for most of the game was led by former Jesuit stand out Becker Hall. Beckers skill was not enough though as Incisal Edge was able to cut open the FVB defense on some quick counter attack goals and won the game 4-3.
Tickle Me Elmo showed early dominance over a recently struggling Les Amis squad. But towards the end of the game Les Amis hit their stride and striked several nice goals. Les Amis striker Baha was able to touch a driven ball over a TME defender and placed it gracefully in the back of the net. Unfortunately their stride was 2 minutes too late and Tickle Me Elmo escaped with a victory.
The Semi Finals lived up to the hype. Doodz and Uptown F.C. put together a clinic on entertaining competitive soccer. With the scoreline going back forth the entire game this was one for the ages. After a full 50 the squads were tied at 5. After several close calls by Uptown F.C. 5 minutes into overtime Raphael was able to sneak a ball by a diving Doodz keeper for the win and a trip to the Championship!
The Ronnies thought they had an easy win going into their semi final vs a shorthanded Frank and Bens. But they realized all to soon that Frank and Bens was not about to roll over. This game set a Crescent City record in shots on goal, saves, and corner kicks. The fast pace was pushed by a Ronnies squad determined to weaken a tireless Frank and Bens. At halftime the score remained 0-0. The Ronnies found the back of the net when a corner hit Al Ramirez and landed in the back of the net, but on his way to goal Al made substantial contact with the keeper and the goal was called back. This was not to stop the Ronnies, as they fired away countless times on goalkeeper Grant Guthrie who time after time stone walled the sharp shooting Ronnies. With 8 mintues left to go in the game and a 0-0 score, Tom Fahl was able to place a shot by the previous pristine Goalkeeper. The Ronnies ended up adding an additional 3 in the closing minutes and won a tight 4-0 match.
F.C. Nighthawk beat Man Eaters 3-2.
Let’s work together.

Increasing the Staff
Lately, many of you may be thinking you have noticed the new referee. Well, PJ did not get a tan – that referee is Steven Morris, and he is the newest addition to the Crescent City Soccer Team.
Steven will not only be the referee for some of the 6v6 and 7v7 coed matches, but he is also helping with many of the off-field activities on which The League are beginning to focus. Steven will be working hard to put in place many of the programs we would like to offer to all of the player-participants in the future. He has some good ideas and is a very friendly guy, so be sure to have a stop-and-chat with him at some point!
The League are also looking to fill a few more positions to assist with various activities. If anyone might like to become involved as a Crescent City Soccer Team Member, feel free to get in touch! Contact us at:

Saturday Coed Kicks Off!!
In Crescent City Soccer’s first ever 7v7 Coed Game the Grasshoppers steamrolled a talented Nola Crush in a surprising rout. Nick Mastagni was the first player to hit the “cap” under the new league rules which limits one player to 3 goals. Nick also received player of the week honors for his incredible work ethic on and off the field.
Our second game was a back and forth battle between a short handed Hungry Hungry Hippos vs St.Charles F.C. The hippo ladies put up a valiant effort and were led by the strong and silent Captain Jim Holsapple. The tide turned in this game several times and it looks as though the seas had calmed and the game was going to end in a 5v5 tie. But then St.Charles F.C. proved to be the Hungriest team on the field when their tireless forward chased down a rocky backpass and with total disregard threw his body at the ball and blocked a clearance that deflected into the goal for the game winner.
Krewe Du Zoo proved to be the dominant squad over a young and restless AC Slater squad. The AC Slater’s who played more like Screach could not keep up with the one touch passing of Cindy Perret and the rest of the Zoo Squad. Krewe Du Zoo got the “W’” and sit atop the Blue Division standings.
Our last game was a barn burner between the newly revamped FC Envy and Crescent City first timers Sketchy Characters. The game was close, with the lead switching several times. FC Envy’s Liz nailed the post several times and couldn’t find the back of net. With her frustration mounting she stole a ball from the Sketchy Character defense and went on a solo mission to the goal. She was not to be denied on her final attempt as she sneaked a ball pass the Sketchy Goalkeeper for the game winner.
All in all we had some great competition and a lot of fun. Next weeks match-ups should prove to deliver the same nail biting action and late minutes heriocs. So if you would like to come out and cheer these amazing amateur athletes please check the League page for the schedule and make your way out to the Lyons Center!
6v6 Play-offs begin this week
The new play-off format will not only feature very exciting match-ups, but will last a week longer than the play-offs in seasons past. The top eight teams (four from each division) will be seeded by regular season performance and face-off in a single elimination tournament for the right to be called Crescent City Champions.
All of the Champions from the past Summer season have qualified for their play-off tournaments. Two of the defending Champions will enter the knock-out contest as #1 seeds – Arsenal (Tues. – Competitive 2) & Real Metairie (Wed. – Competitive 3).
The Monday and Tuesday first & second round pairings are posted on the league schedule pages, and the Wednesday/Saturday pairings will be announced very soon. Best of luck to all of the teams who have qualified for this seasons’ tournaments.
