New Coed League Champion Crowned!
FC INTERNATIONAL SHOE.
With innuendo-a-plenty and money-makers shaking to the tune of a custom-mixed soundtrack, fair warning is always provided of FC International Shoe’s immanent presence. Seconds later, and upon initial sighting, Jackie “Slaughter” Sumell typically unleashes an earth-shattering call, alerting all within the city limits that this is her house.
Sunday’s league final was no different. Having their territory marked with the expertise of a hiked leg, FC INTERNATIONAL SHOE took the field for warm-up. All was not well in the camp however, as there was an apparent dispute as to who the team leader was going to be for this Championship Final. Per usual, Jackie had no trouble taking matters into her own hands (or feet) as she furtively zero’d in a size-5 heat-seeking missile that brought Lance M. to his knees in submissive agony. With confirmation complete that everyone was indeed on her turf, Slaughter gave the “okay” for the game to begin.
As the teams took the field, the Slaughterhouse Six were matched across the mid-line by a strong Uptowners squad. This was made evident early in the game, as the neighborhood’s namesake struck first and against the run of play to establish themselves as driver of the Championship vehicle.
The ensuing innuendo and end-to-end action saw no goal for either side as Uptowners maintained their position as leaders, that is, until a handball in the box awarded a penalty to FC INTERNATIONAL SHOE, and the equalizer for which the team had been frantically searching was found.
With time winding down, the once warned Lance M. mustered the courage to attempt yet another effort to take the team on his back. This time, Slaughter had no reprimand, nor did the Uptowners, and with a late strike that found the back of the net, Lance’s efforts proved heroic. It seemed as though he had delivered his squad to the promised land. Though, having never rolled over for any team, the Uptowners had other ideas, and excellent team play resulted in a declarative shot that would punctuate the end of regulation.
With both teams meeting at the mid line for an explanation of the overtime rules and the flipping of the cellular device, the sides were determined and the final six would take the field for each team. The excitement would be short-lived, however. A 2-cone violation gave FC the indirect free kick from 15 yards. Off of a clever assisting tap to the right, a low and driven strike from Jonathan Harris found the spot and sent his team into cries of jubilance, establishing FC INTERNATIONAL SHOE as the victor. Awards, Photos and Chevy Champagne followed, as the new Crescent City Soccer Sunday League Champions began apply heat to the cushion of their newly found throne.
Congratulations goes out to FC INTERNATIONAL SHOE for a Championship performance in their inaugural season, and we wish you luck in defending the title.
The league would like to thank both finalists for a cleanly played and entertaining contest. We look forward to having both sides back for the Spring season.
