Great divisional matchup left two teams sharing a piece of the first place pie
This Wednesday night’s 6:00 opener pitted two long-standing clubs against one another, and the match demonstrated precisely how these two sides have accumulated so many championship appearances between them. Despite being short staffed on both sides (one sub for Real Metarie and none for Kilmarnock) the game was hard-fought and fast paced throughout.
It began as a cagey affair, with both sides defending well against the final touch towards goal, but Kilmarnock opened the scoring with a well-orchestrated counterattack. They left the Real Metarie midfielders in the dust as they brought numbers forward and took the early lead. Metarie came back with a good spell of possession and finished one as well in the first half to bring the 1-1 tie to half time.
After halftime is when the game opened up a bit. Both teams managed to get behind the final defender with a bit more regularity. A couple of fine one-touch finishes finishes by all-stars Eduardo and José of Real Metarie (one particular Eduardo juggle over the keeper comes to mind) made the difference as high as a 5-1 score with 15 minutes remaining, but Kilmarnock showed they would not go down so easily. As soon as Metarie lulled, the momentum swung sharply back in favor of Kilmarnock.
It was everything the blue defense could do to hold off the Kilmarnock onslaught, and a well placed Kilmarnock ball to the right corner made it 5-4 with 3 minutes to go. Metarie were at 6’s and 7’s trying to weather the storm. With Kilmarnock pressing hard, Real Metarie tried to end the game with possession, but the pressure was too much. Kilmarnock ripped off a couple of good chances before Metarie could close it out. Kilmarnock were finally caught too high when a Real Metarie dummy at midfield left the the keeper alone against two Real Metarie attackers who never looked back as they put the game out of reach again at 6-4.
This great divisional matchup left both teams sharing a piece of the first place pie in the Left Division of the Wednesday Night League, and they both earned it- Great work, teams!
