Field Monkeys avenge earlier loss, draw to Crescent City Awesome to win Coed Division I crown

After losing to and tying Crescent City Awesome during the regular season, the Field Monkeys at last beat that squad 2-1 on Sunday to capture the Coed Division I title.

Ramon Vargas finished both of Field Monkeys’ goals. Michael Durkee scored for the runners-up, who placed first overall in the regular season and had not lost a game going into the championship match.

Field Monkeys’ Natalie DiBenedetto Newton set up Vargas’ first goal after their teammates intercepted a through pass from Durkee in Crescent City Awesome’s defensive third of the pitch. Durkee atoned for that play by leveling the score in the first 10 seconds of the second half – after the kickoff was tapped to him, he slalomed past the Monkeys’ defense and blasted in a 15-yard shot using the outside of his right foot.

Each side’s defense then closed ranks and allowed few chances for the next 20 or so minutes. Both goalkeepers snuffed out what few chances did materialize with soaring dives and desperate, goal-line parries.

Vargas netted the winner with less than three minutes left in the match. Shortly after, Durkee just missed forcing a likely overtime by plastering a long-distance, left-footed shot on the crossbar.

Crescent City Awesome had blown out the champions 6-1 on March 13 and played them to a 3-3 draw on April 22. It finished the season with eight wins, three ties and one loss, and its stout defense conceded the fewest goals of any club in the division.

The Field Monkeys ended up with nine wins, one draw, and two defeats. They secured their second Crescent City Soccer title, having previously conquered the Spring 2010 Saturday Recreational League.
