Toasters crowned Saturday Competitive Division 2 champions, promoted to D1

After suffering their only defeat in the regular season finale, the Toasters won three straight matches to claim Crescent City Soccer’s Saturday Competitive Division 2 title for the fall season. The champions, captained by Benjamin Morris, will be promoted to Division 1. The Toasters, runners-up in the regular season, followed up their 7-5 loss on Nov. 12 to the then-top-ranked Warriors with a 4-2 win over Mooseknuckle in the Dec. 3 quarterfinals. Striker Andy McCabe scored two goals for the Toasters to help them overcome an early 2-0 deficit. In the semifinal round on Dec. 10, the Toasters bagged a 5-2 victory over Tesla FC, a No. 8 seed that ousted the Warriors in the quarterfinals. Forward Ramon Vargas scored a hat trick for the Toasters off assists from defender Nick Gardner, defender Morris and forward Joe Gorrin — the goal off Morris’ pass was a spectacular, turnaround, mid-air volley from about 20 yards out. Vargas also assisted teammate midfielder Adam Carr on a score, and midfielder Josh Crochet added another. Hours later, the Toasters secured their first-ever Crescent City Soccer championship by toppling Wally World 8-3. Among the Toasters’ scorers were Vargas, with another three; Crochet; Carr and Gorrin. Other members of the Toasters include goalie James Everhart, defender Mike Baierski, midfielder Joe Coffman, midfielder Tim McDonald, midfielder Shawn Lesko and forward Nick Staley.
