After suffering their only defeat in the regular season finale, the Toasters won three straight matches to claim Crescent City Soccer’s Saturday Competitive Division 2 title for the fall season. The champions, captained by Benjamin Morris, will be promoted to Division 1. The Toasters, runners-up in the regular season, followed up their 7-5 loss on Nov. 12 to the then-top-ranked Warriors with a 4-2 win over Mooseknuckle in the Dec. 3 quarterfinals. Striker Andy McCabe scored two goals for the Toasters to help them overcome an early 2-0 deficit. In the semifinal round on Dec. 10, the Toasters bagged a 5-2 victory over Tesla FC, a No. 8 seed that ousted the Warriors in the quarterfinals. Forward Ramon Vargas scored a hat trick for the Toasters off assists from defender Nick Gardner, defender Morris and forward Joe Gorrin — the goal off Morris’ pass was a spectacular, turnaround, mid-air volley from about 20 yards out. Vargas also assisted teammate midfielder Adam Carr on a score, and midfielder Josh Crochet added another. Hours later, the Toasters secured their first-ever Crescent City Soccer championship by toppling Wally World 8-3. Among the Toasters’ scorers were Vargas, with another three; Crochet; Carr and Gorrin. Other members of the Toasters include goalie James Everhart, defender Mike Baierski, midfielder Joe Coffman, midfielder Tim McDonald, midfielder Shawn Lesko and forward Nick Staley.

Sunday's match between FC Science and Agent Orange came down to a battle of their defenses.

Sunday’s match between FC Science and Agent Orange came down to a battle of their defenses. FC Science saw few shot opportunities in the first half, but was able to capitalize on one. A beautiful cross from Eric (Sticks) Skinner set up a great left foot shot for Marta Jewson. Agent Orange were able to get some great shots on target and create several promising opportunities, but were unable to slip anything past FC Science goalie Brandon Strunk. The Agent’s defense remained strong and were able to hold Science to only one goal in the first half.

The Second half showed the strength of both teams defensively. Science was only able to penetrate the apt defense of Agent Orange once in the second half. A left foot cross shot from Lindsay Caton to Matthew (Baby Thighs) Eaton was deflected by an Agent Orange defender into their own goal. After this unfortunate turn, Agent Orange came out swinging. They cut through the Science defense like a warm knife through butter to put one in the net, narrowing the deficit to a single goal. Agent Orange kept coming strong through the rest of the second half, but the strong Science defense was able to hold them. It was a hard fought game by both teams. This was an important win for Science, as it puts them in a top spot going into playoffs.

————————————————————————————————

An Epic Battle Ends in Cannon Fire!

What a game…and what a finish!

Monday evening’s 8:00pm match-up saw Real Bam, equipped with red shirts and medical prowess, take on the seasoned Crescent City Soccer League veterans, Soccer Team A. The showdown proved epic!

The first 15 minutes of play saw chances from both teams to open their scoring accounts, but with confident tackles and picture-book saves, it became evident that both defenses were going to be stingy in any allowances. Eventually, Real Bam drew first blood on a follow-up goal after a great save from the Soccer Team “A” GK…1-0, Real Bam.

It was not long before the equalizer came. A dizzying combination of passes resulted in the Soccer Team “A” attack getting behind the Red’s defense. With a final rolling pass played across the face of goal to an STA forward lurking on the back post, a fast-retreating Real Bam center back reached in an attempt to disrupt the pass, while facing his own net. The touch proved costly, as it found the back of the Red’s own net…1-1, which is how the half would end.

The start of the second half saw the momentum remain in the favor of Soccer Team “A,” as they mustered up a rewarding effort around the 35 minute mark…2-1, STA. The ensuing confidence saw a third goal almost immediately afterward, making the score 3-1 in favor of STA!

As time pushed on, excitement grew and momentum moved to the other end of the field – Real Bam began creating chances of their own. Persistent pressure on the STA net eventually broke through, as the Red’s found their second bagger of the game…3-2, STA.

As the show-down neared the final whistle, everyone in the park knew that another goal from either side would decide the game, but who would it be?

On both ends, shot after shot met fantastic saves or flew just wide of the goal. With fatigue in their legs, both teams pushed on. The game grew more physical, and with just under 3 minutes to play, the relatively silent (but deadly) Real Bam foward, Scott Burris would put his mark on the match…posted just high of the mid-line with his back to goal, an expertly distributed counter-attack ball from the Real Bam GK, found Burris’ feet. With one quick inward lay-off to his teammate, Burris spun off of the tight defender to receive an unselfish and perfectly weighted return ball that saw the forward 1v1 with the STA net-minder. Scott was poised and clinical this time…3-3!

Time ticked down. Two STA corners and as many direct kicks from inside of 15 yards left Real Bam short of fingernails. Gasping for air and inquiring as to the remaining time, the Reds dodged bullet after bullet as time worked its way inside of the final 15 seconds…

A final STA shot found the hands of the Real Bam GK. Possession was secured with a bowled ball to the right flank, and with one swift cross-field pass, it was Scott Burris 1v1 with his defender on the left side. A positive touch began the foot-race toward the STA net, and just before both players ran out of turf and into touch, Burris dispatched an expertly aimed ball of cannon-fire across the face of goal and into the back-side top corner, simultaneously dispatching Soccer Team “A” and just as the final whistle was being raised to the referee’s lips!

It was an unbelievable finish to a very exciting game! Congratulations to Scott Burris, Real Bam and a Thank You out to both teams for the show and a well-fought, clean (for the most part) game…

Crescent City Soccer is putting on a 3v3 Soccer Tournament!!

Chances are if you play at Crescent City, Travis Amick has busted a sick spin move around you and then tried to rainbow your keeper, all in his blazing fast yellow cleats. Travis has played for the Pelicans, Kilmarnock, and Craigslist F.C. for over 2 years and is a 3-time CCS champion. Much more importantly he is a dear friend to many of us and a true gentlemen on the field. Always having fun, always innovating his arsenal of moves, and always ready to whip out his bicycle kick, this guy loves the game.

Unfortunately Travis broke his neck in tragic accident two weeks ago . He is alive, stable, and making a little progress each day but is mostly paralyzed at the moment. He has an incredibly long road of recovery ahead of him, but if anyone can do it, it’s Travis. At this point nothing is for certain about his recovery, and anything is possible. Please keep Travis in your thoughts in the coming weeks. The CCS family would like to provide the Amick family with some sort of additional financial help during these hard times and have planned a fundraising charity tournament. 100% of proceeds will goto the National Transplant Assistance Fund & Catastrophic Injury Program which will help the family with the cost with Travis’ surgery.

Who: Any member of the Sunday Recreational Co-Ed League (Division I and II), plus their families

What: A pot-luck picnic

When: Saturday, September 10th, from noon until whenever

Contact: Grace at gowen@uno.edu
Where: Audubon Park

Why: Because you’re awesome and we want to get to know you better!

All information will be sent through your team captain, so RSVP to them (and quick!). Once we get a head count a sign up sheet will be going around so we can make sure we have plenty of meats and sides, cups and plates, desserts and more desserts.

So grab your favorite beverage (adult or otherwise!) some chairs, blankets, and a dish to pass and join us!

And remember to bring those soccer balls. Sure, this is about relaxing and getting to know one another, but it’s also about playing some soccer!
